Histoire et Architecture

Fondation : La porte a été initialement construite vers 1126 sous le règne de l'émir almoravide Ali ibn Youssef.
Ancien Nom : À l'époque almohade, elle était connue sous le nom de Bab Fès, car elle constituait l'une des entrées principales de la ville menant vers le nord.
Signification du nom : "Bab" signifie "porte" en arabe, et "Khemis" signifie "jeudi". Elle tire son nom actuel du grand souk (marché) hebdomadaire qui se tenait traditionnellement devant elle tous les jeudis.
Structure : Elle est flanquée de tours rectangulaires massives et possède un passage intérieur en plusieurs virages à angle droit, une caractéristique typique des structures défensives de l'époque pour ralentir les assaillants.

La Porte Aujourd'hui
Bab El Khemis est désormais célèbre pour abriter l'un des plus grands marchés aux puces de Marrakech. On y trouve une immense diversité d'objets : des antiquités, des meubles vintage des années 60 et 70, des objets artisanaux en métal, et bien d'autres articles de seconde main.

History and Architecture

Foundation: The gate was originally built around 1126 during the reign of the Almoravid Emir Ali ibn Youssef.
Ancient Name: At the time Almohad, it was known as Bab Fez, as it was one of the main entrances to the city leading north.
Meaning of the name: "Bab" means "gate" in Arabic, and "Khemis" means "Thursday". It takes its current name from the grand souk (market) weekly that traditionally stood in front of it every Thursday.
Structure: It is flanked by massive rectangular towers and has an inner passage in several right-angled corners, a typical feature of the defensive structures of the time to slow down the attackers.

The Door Today
Bab El Khemis is now famous for hosting one of the largest flea markets in Marrakech. There is an immense diversity of objects: antiques, vintage furniture from the 60's and 70's, metal handicrafts, and many other second-hand items.
